Invsible Children

Many children in Africa are being taken away and are forced into becoming soldiers. An organization Invisible Children, INC, was created solely for those children. The organization asks for letters from you to help support the children and encouraging the people who captured them to let them go.

THIS SATURDAY will be the march from Ala Moana park to the state Capital if you would like to fight for what is right.

For those of you who haven't heard, one of the four teams who represented Campbell made it to the next round of the national WorldQuest, which will be held in Washington DC!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ERICKSON, ISSAC, XUCHYLL AND JENNIFER FOR WINNING! ALSO CONGRATUALATIONS TO THE TEAMS THAT PARTICIPATED IN WORLDQUEST, WE ALL DID GREAT!!!

We enjoyed ourselves there.
For the incoming seniors and juniors, next year we hope you continue studying for this spectacular event and win again, but also we want you to have fun!

The following e-mail has been forwarded to all PAAC club advisors and members, if you did not receive it please take the time to read it and take action (by September 29th 5 PM). On behalf of Jill Takasaki Canfield, the PAAC Executive Director and Natasha Chappel, High School Program Director, your help would be greatly appreciately:

Dear PAAC Club Advisors, teachers, students, and former travel program participants:
You may have already heard about the cuts to the DOE budget, but if you looked at the detailed list on their website you would have seen that PAAC has been zeroed out! They (Pat Hamamoto/DOE admin) are accepting ‘responses’ to the proposed budget cuts. We need for our PAAC students to speak up - - they will listen to students.
It’s not near our total budget, but it goes a very long way in leveraging private funding. We can’t stress enough how much we need to have that DOE ‘buy-in’ to obtain other outside grants to fund our classes, clubs, conferences, travel programs, scholarship programs, public forums, and international visitor program. We need MORE global education, not less!
Here are some guidelines for your students:
· Need to respond by September 29, Monday
· Go to the DOE website: www.doe.k12.hi.us ; scroll down to Budget - - Comment Form
· It has to be only 1000 characters (less than 150 words)
· It asks for:
Program Name: Pacific and Asian Affairs Council
Number of students impacted: you can use any of these figures – annually 1500 students directly; 1600 students indirectly through the 160 teachers served; in every school district; 68% of public high schools in the state.
Program Effectiveness: here the students should succinctly try to explain why they took the class and/or why they feel that it is worthwhile and how not having it would impact them. It could be to a) make enough credits to graduate b) interested in current events/issues that are not a part of regular classes c) enjoy the opportunities that are made available by PAAC like conferences, travel and scholarships. Personal and specificity is good.
Names OPTIONAL: It does not ask for names but students should include their name and school.
Hearing from teachers and parents as well, can make a big difference too! So, if you know of anyone or you yourself would like to write something, please….it would be much appreciated!

PAAC Members,
For those who attended the 9/16 General Mtg. we appreciate you being there. For those who missed out on the meeting we simply further discussed the benefits of being in PAAC because Natasha Chappel, the state of Hawaii's PAAC High School director had dropped by and made a presentation in Ms. Bangert's. We also discussed about World Quest and it's specific categories (please refer to previous posting entitled 'UPCOMING EVENTS!' or the PAAC website for more details).

People that signed up for WorldQuest and for a category to research, please be prepared on Tuesday with a hard copy of an article in relation to the category you chose to share with everyone at the meeting. This is a simple way to have everyone get started with preparing for the competition and to just be "more aware" of the world around us. (:

This year's Academic WorldQuest Competition will be held in celebration of Hawaii International Education Week.

The categories for this year’s competition are:
Population Issues in Developing Countries
Nine countries are expected to account for the world's rapid population growth out to 2050, with eight of these countries in the developing world. This category will consist of questions about the demographic challenges that developing countries face.

Water
By 2025, half of the world's population will live in water-stressed or water-scarce regions. This category will consist of questions about the impact of water scarcity throughout the world.

Alternative Fuels
Out to 2025, world energy demand is expected to increase by 55 percent, a rise driven largely by industrialization trends in Asia. This category will consist of questions about energy dependence and alternate sources.

Biotechnology and Genetics
The completion of the Human Genome Project several years ago marked a historic achievement in the field of genetics and has opened up numerous paths for further exploration in biotechnology. This category will consist of questions about the development of genetics research and biotechnology.

Transnational Crime
This category will consist of questions about organized crime, global terrorism, and trafficking in humans, drugs, and arms.

Current Events
In this category, students will answer questions about world events happening in the beginning of 2009.Current EventsIn this category, students will answer questions about world events that occurred between June and September 2008.

For the next meeting, don't forget to bring in any forms/money for the Feb. 23rd conference AND the March 3rd field trip to the Thai exhibition. Make sure your permission forms are completely filled out and signed by your parents where indicated.

Also for those interested in the travel scholarship to China, remember to complete all requirements as mentioned on the application and be sure to see Ms. Chun at your scheduled appointment. Otherwise you can find her in the library or in G-207 during 2nd and 3rd period.

One more thing...
YEARBOOK PICTURES FOR THE P.A.A.C. CLUB IS SCHEDULED TO BE ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12 AT 3:15 PM, BUT PLEASE BE THERE AT LEAST 5-10 MINS. PRIOR TO THAT TIME AT THE COURTYARD. (It should be set up just outside of K-building.)

Class is from 2:45 PM - 5:15 PM, every Mondays & Fridays. If you are not registered for these classes you're still welcomed to attend the first class session and decide from there whether you want to actually be in it or not. Any other questions, please direct them to Ms. Bangert.

CONGRATS TO OUR PAAC TEAM!!

Saturday (11-17-07) our JCHS PAAC team members attended our first World Quest Conference and competition. Our team members: Jennifer Quach, Erickson Baniaga, Xuchyll Roman and Isaac Fujikawa placed 38th out of 72 teams! This was ONLY after one month of preparation! Great Job Everyone!!

All the sponsors are so proud and happy for your hard work and we can't wait to see what happens next year at the World Quest conference.

Current News

PAAC members are asked to be sure they have their Parental Permission forms for publication. Soon the Oceanic TV has asked to film JCHS and the school wants the PAAC team members to be included the commercial for JCHS. More information will be forthcoming, so be sure to have your signed permission form as soon possible. Contact Mrs. Aly or Mrs. Chun for more information.

Hiya

I need by the absolute latest tomorrow all monies due for lunch and teams. Truly today is better for me so I can get the money order and mail it today. Please turn in all your forms (permission/lunch) in no later than tomorrow morning or you/your team will not be able to participate in World Quest.

As for the teams who are going-Start your studing now!!! You need to know current events, such as: Who are involved in the Darfur crisis? Who died recently in Country Music? Who was the last President that died? Who is the Prime Minister of Great Britain? Who is the King of Saudi Arabia? King of Egypt? Where is NATO located? Etc. etc.....

Prepare and make us shine at PAAC!!! Let them know we are teams who work hard in competition!

Everyone see me this Thursday so we can make some arrangements.

Everyone needs to turn in their $3 dues to Gemel S. ASAP!

Looking Ahead

Student Team Members must turn in their monies for the competition on November 17, 2007.

Cost per team is $10 or $2.50 for each team member. Also due by Monday will be your $5.00 lunch cost. I cannot do a "food run" or you leave for lunch without unless you are with your parents (physically). This is for safety reasons of course!!

Be sure to come to my room today to pick up the application forms. Money and applications are due MONDAY- October 29, 2007. I must turn all monies and forms in by October 31, 2007.

I cannot and will not accept Late Forms and Payments.

Take your forms home and have your parents sign any applicable portions and turn in all monies by next Monday (10-29-07).

Also you MUST start researching to start the process for preparing for the competition. This contest will not be successful if your team waits until the last minute to prepare.
